Famed Humphrey Wrestling Club Now at HSE High School
The Humphrey Wrestling Club has teamed up with HSE High School Wrestling Club. The Humphrey Wrestling Club was started by Jim Humphrey, a former world class wrestler and well respected coach (a former US Olympic Head Coach, Canadian Olympic Coach, US World Team Head Coach and Pan Am Coach, just to name a few).
“I think the HSE Wrestling Club will be a powerhouse with this new program” says Steve Hiner, assistant coach for the HSE Varsity Wrestling Club/Team. Hiner wrestled at IU with Humphrey as his coach beginning in 1987. Later, Humphrey, whose sons wrestled at Lawrence North, convinced Hiner to assist him in helping the coaching staff at LN from 2003-2006. Together, they helped Brett Crousore, who at the time was head coach of LN, win back-to-back state championships in 2004 and 2005. Incidentally, Crousore is now the assistant principal at LN and plans to continue helping with the Humphrey Wrestling Club at HSE.
Humphrey’s two sons, Jordin and Reece, are both well established wrestlers. In fact, Jordin, the older brother, wrestled at Ohio State, and is the principal organizer, running practices of the current Humphrey Wrestling Club at HSE. Jordin states, “The three main items I would like to accomplish with our program is, first, to allow all students from around the state to get involved; second, to help the HSE Wrestling Club out as much as possible; and third, to provide superior technique to the committed wrestlers.” Jordin’s younger brother, Reece, will be a senior at Ohio State and is expected to win the NCAA Division 1 championship at 141lbs. He was runner up last year.
“This is a great opportunity for all kids in the HSE schools,” says Greg Gastineau, head coach of the HSE High School Team and Club President. He continues, “The HSE Wrestling Club serves as a vehicle for allowing wrestlers to come together and learn outstanding wrestling technique. One of my ultimate goals is to operate like the HSE Swim Team, where we will have inter squads with about 200 kids competing within the school district.”
The HSE Wrestling Club is open to all kids who are interested in wrestling. All practices will be in the HSE Wrestling room. All ages are invited to attend. This will be a year-round camp running on the same schedule as before: Sundays, Mondays and Wednesdays. Hiner concludes, “If anyone wants their child to learn wrestling, there is no better place to send them in the state.”
